The Torgya Festival In Arunachal Pradesh

The main attraction of the Torgya festival is the three-day performance of monastic dances by monks in the courtyard of the main temple. Monastic dances portray both historical and imaginary events. Various types of monastery dance, including Phagcham, Durdag, Lhamcham, Chamchin, and Jhacham, among others, are typically performed while wearing wooden masks and ornamental clothing to the beat of drum and cymbal beats. The dances of the monasteries are carefully planned and arranged.

The three-day event includes popular costumed dances performed in the monastery's courtyard with the aim of driving away evil spirits and bringing prosperity and pleasure to everyone in the next year. The Losjker Chungiye, which is performed by the monastery's monks, and the Pha Chan are two well-known dances performed by performers wearing colourful masks and costumes. Each dance reflects a myth, and the masks and costumes are animal forms like cows, tigers, sheep, and so on.

Worship of the image made especially for the occasion is part of the Torgya festival, which is held on the first day. 16 days before the festival, the visuals begin to be created. The figure is made by 14 monastic lamas and measures 3 feet (0.91 metres) in height and 2 feet (0.61 metres) in width. The monks of the monastery recite scriptures while another set of lamas play drums from the first day the image is created until it is finished. Ghee, barley, milk, and molasses are used to create the image, which is made in memory of Lama Tsongkapa. The amount of barley utilised to create the image will vary.

In a procession to the place of the mound, the image "Torma" is brought out at the same time. It is carried by Arpo Lamas, or monks, who have bells around their waists. The Torma is accompanied by two more Lamas, one of them is dressed in a male yak-horn mask and the other in a female yak-horn mask. The Choige yap-yum, which translates to "man" and "female" respectively, refers to these two Lamas as Lama Tsongkapa's male and female servants. Other Lamas are accompanying the Torma in a parade with swords, drums, and cymbals. The Head Lama ritually touches the Torma when he arrives at the Mechang's place, and then.
