The Meaning & History Of Thaipusam Festival

According to traditional beliefs, Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati, was born on this day. Many people also think that Lord Murugan received a spear from Goddess Parvati on this day, just before the battle with Soorapadnam, an asura (demon) who was the offspring of Rishi Vajranaga and Princess Varangi. According to this particular narrative, Soorapadnam repeatedly defeated the devas. Finally, with no other choice left, they turned to Lord Shiva for assistance. Through the use of his mystical abilities, he then created a powerful warrior (Lord Kartikeya) from akashic nothingness (ethereal emptiness). What comes next is For the benefit of humanity, Lord Kartikeya engaged in a bloody battle with the demon and killed him. Possibly for this reason, Lord Murugan is sometimes referred to as the Hindu God of War.
