Basant or Vasant Panchmi Festival in Punjab, Haryana

One of the well-known Indian festivities that marks the beginning of spring is Basant or Vasant Panchmi. This holiday is also known as Saraswati Puja, which is an homage to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of gyan, or knowledge, art, and culture. This blessed holiday is observed with much joy, enthusiasm, fervour, and devotion. 

 Yellow costumes are worn by people to symbolise the mustard fields of Punjab and Haryana. First-time students at the school are urged to write their first words in front of the Goddess Saraswati Pooja on this day.

 

Basant Panchmi's Past

Although there are several explanations for why Basant Panchmi is celebrated, one explanation that receives a lot of support is the one involving the famous poet Kalidasa. According to mythology, Kalidasa planned to end his suffering by killing himself after his wife rejected him. He made the decision to jump into a river and commit suicide by drowning. Goddess Saraswati appeared from the river just as he was ready to jump, bestowing upon him great wisdom. He later rose to fame as a poet.

According to the Hindu calendar, the Indian holiday Basant Panchami, also known as Vasant Panchami, occurs on the fifth day of Magha mass (month). People begin preparing for the festival of Holi, which takes place 40 days after Vasant Panchami celebrations, as Basant Panchami approaches.
